'I just met Jesus' brother!' from you new Southern California friend
9/24/2009 11:41:32 PM
Can you imagine trading in the market, and striking up a conversation over eggplant,
with this guy who tells you he's the brother of Jesus?
Divided by 6, multiplied into the millions, to the power of F
9/24/2009 11:41:15 PM
Good Morning. James 1, verses 5 - 8
Wisdom may be broken down into six areas: understanding, discretion, prudence, discernment, knowledge,
action. I believe it is critical to comprehend these, and to desire them enough that we ask God for
We must be CLEAR about wisdom, and its origins
9/24/2009 11:41:00 PM
Last Fall, I did a series of teachings on the beliefs of other religions--it was quite fascinating, and also
disturbing. I kicked off with Scientology--which has a technical dictionary of 3000 new terms and concepts,
and is difficult to get a handle on.
Are you a wilting wildflower?
9/24/2009 11:40:46 PM
As much as I love dissecting and figuring out the application of wisdom, I suppose it is
prudent to move on into James. . .
Meet them at the door, and don't let them in!
9/24/2009 11:40:27 PM
Does temptation issue forth from the hand of God? James 1, verses 12-16 New Revised Standard Version--
Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and will receive the crown of life
that the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
9/24/2009 11:40:10 PM
What to do--should I address every block of James' writing, or pick and choose? But then, I fear
that I will get e-mails from 13 of you asking about the verse(s) I didn't mention. . .
9/24/2009 11:39:54 PM
Sometimes I look in the mirror after morning toilette, and conclude, 'okay, good. . . makeup looks god, eyes look vibrant, hair is in place. . . ready, go---' Other times, I look in the mirror, and even after my best make-up job, walk away thinking, 'well, it isn't great--but its the best I've got today. . . I'm off----'
9/24/2009 11:39:37 PM
Most people use toothpaste. In fact, folks are quite choosy in their brand for its flavor, benefits, and squeezability factors. But all toothpaste bears one thing in common--once it is squeezed out, it is next to impossible to get the paste back into the tube! So it is with our words.
How Good is your Religion?
9/24/2009 11:39:20 PM
I was talking to a friend of mine the other night who commented, "I never would have known there was so 'much' in the book of James." Much? Out of this first chapter, we have been able to get a historical glimpse of the first century Jews who accepted the Gospel in Jerusalem, and then went back to their homes, where they faced persecution, but remained steadfast in the truth that they had met.
We interrupt this program for this important announcement. . . . . .
9/24/2009 11:38:56 PM
beep duh duh beep-- beep duh duh beep-- do you remember how the 6 o'clock news programs used to start?
There was this familiar important sounding intro as hard news was delivered into family rooms across
America. . . Well, I would like to impart something I just experienced that I believe is breaking across
America as well. . .
Mercy Me - a band, and a great way to live
9/24/2009 11:38:41 PM
Mercy. . . the word has continued to resonate in my mind since last we met. James remarks in 2.13, "...judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment!"
9/24/2009 11:38:23 PM
Good Morning--we have a conundrum on our hands today!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
What's the use of saying you have faith if you don't prove it by your actions? That kind of faith can't save anyone. (James 2.14 ff.)
9/24/2009 11:37:46 PM
Good Morning I mean, "Dear Brothers and Sisters",
In James 2.19 we see James' mood make a decided shift--he seems frustrated with being unable to make his point to these new Jewish believers--their conduct simply had to line up with the faith they claimed to have!
9/24/2009 11:37:27 PM
When we read much of the story of Abraham, we can see how obedient he was to God's direction, and that obedience was counted to him as righteousness. But let us not forget that Abraham slipped up, too.
Right thinking leads to right speaking
9/24/2009 11:37:07 PM
James again turns our attention to the importance of being prudent with our speech. In verses 1 and 2 of chapter 3, he says, "Dear brothers and sisters, not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged by God with greater strictness." (NLT)
9/24/2009 11:36:46 PM
humility. . . The elder President Bush praised Ronald Reagan's humility in his eulogy. In 1981, Reagan was recovering from the gunshot wound he received during the assassination attempt.
Humility>.........Pride> Where are you on the continuum?
9/24/2009 11:36:25 PM
The definition of humility is far from the definition of pride. . . or is it? The common dictionary's first entry for pride is: a sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect.
9/24/2009 11:35:47 PM
If love is a many splendored thing, then peace is a multi-faceted thing. James 3.18 - Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.
9/24/2009 11:35:26 PM
Why DO people fight, anyway? We have just discussed various facets of peace, and we would all agree that living in peace is a much better way to go, and yet. . . well, pick up the newspaper--what do you see? Turn on the radio--what do you hear?
9/24/2009 11:34:58 PM
Sometimes in my constantly-thinking mind, I am aware that I have a sensation of someone placing a quilt around my shoulders--made up of things people have told me, things I've observed, and those thoughts that I am currently talking to God about--take this past weekend for example. With my daughter, Amy, I flew up to Lake Tahoe for a family reunion.
9/24/2009 11:34:41 PM
In the prayer Jesus taught us to pray, is "Hallowed be thy name," and we finish by saying, "In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen." We close other prayers with "In Jesus' name, Amen." Why do we say that? Why finish our prayers in such a fashion? Let's take a look at what God's Word says about His name. . .
No ONE WAY sign in prayer
9/24/2009 11:34:18 PM
James 4.2 - you do no have because you do not ask God. Prayer~Asking. . . praising. . . thanking. . . confessing. . . listening?
9/24/2009 11:30:16 PM
Good Morning! Some voices just make me think of Americana. . . one such voice is Paul Harvey's. . . I love it when he says, "and now you know the rest of the story". Well, the rest of the story of the book of James is two-fold.
Do you believe in miracles? Read Danny's story, and you will!
9/24/2009 11:29:44 PM
Good Morning. . . 'Need a God of miracles?
It was a little more than eight years ago that our family of six moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to Southern California. We were settling into our new San Clemente neighborhood nicely, which was no small feat with Matthew-a senior, Amy-a junior in high school, Dylan-5, and Danny, two years old.
You're starring in the next "Survivor". . . 'ready?
9/24/2009 11:29:17 PM
"Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about.
Look for Him in the Clouds!
9/24/2009 11:28:45 PM
Let us continue on in James 5~
"Be patient, then, brothers [and sisters] until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.
9/24/2009 11:28:16 PM
The next passage we seek to understand in James is chapter 5, verses 1 - 6--not pretty. Today, I am quoting from "The Message", which is a paraphrase, written in contemporary language--"And a final word to you arrogant rich. Take some lessons in lament.
9/24/2009 11:27:44 PM
- Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do it, sins. James 4.17 "Sin" is another word that is rather passe in our society, definitely not politically correct! Recently, someone asked me if there is a list of sins somewhere; she really wanted to be clear, and may I say, that her desire to do right before God was so pure. . .
Judge others like you want to be judged
9/24/2009 11:27:27 PM
I pray this greeting finds you well, my friends. As there are new folks being added to our numbers daily, let me first say 'Welcome! Welcome, Ally, Cathy, and Lorna. . .' We have been working our way through the small book of James, (just five chapters), written by the half-brother of Jesus.
9/24/2009 11:27:09 PM
Grammar classes were always my favorite; I liked diagramming sentences--breaking the parts of speech into little branches and trees. Later, as a 7th grade English teacher, I liked teaching my students to diagram, so that they too would better understand the rules of language grammar. Today's lesson: verbs.
9/24/2009 11:26:52 PM
James 4.4-6, followed by some cool insight. You adulterers! Don't you realize that friendship with this world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again, that if your aim is to enjoy this world, you can't be a friend of God.
What kind of prayers does God answer?
9/24/2009 11:19:28 PM
Prayer is one of God's greatest gifts to us, wouldn't you agree? I have found that not only is there much to learn about it, people WANT to learn about it, and talk about it--especially when God answers prayer--the Divine intersecting our paths.
9/24/2009 11:19:06 PM
You do not have, because you do not ask God. James 4, verse 2 (the last part)
Why don't people pray? Atheists don't pray because they say there is no God; agnostics don't pray because while there might be a God, they don't believe in Him--so, why pray? Others pray sporadically, thinking they are allotted just so many prayers, and they don't want to waste them.
Unwrapping the Gift of Contentment
9/24/2009 11:18:43 PM
And so our Lord's brother, James, launches us into a discussion about 'quarrels and fights' and the cause of them--'you want what you don't have'-- what I propose is that what they thought they wanted--position, possessions, etc., was not what they wanted at all, but rather substitutes for a void inside. . .
What in the world is wisdom? James 1.2-5
9/22/2009 11:23:39 PM
Long after Scripture was written, it was broken into chapters and verses and even paragraphs.
When properly seeking to understand meaning, we must always look at context... huh?
Let us look again at the first few verses in James:
I don't need any more patience--thanks anyway James 1
9/22/2009 11:22:18 PM
James barely says 'hello' to his first century Christian converts, and he launches into the whole subject
of trials. . . we have to stop and ask ourselves 'why?'
You Gotta Love James- James 1.1-20
9/22/2009 11:21:12 PM
Since ALL of you looked up James 1, verse 1 yesterday to see how he identified himself, it will be easy to locate
it again! (see how I love you) After our thorough investigation of how we got the Bible--what it comprises--
and the 'basics' on why it is reliable, I felt led to dive into a study on the book of James.
Driving Focus and Contentment James 1.9-11
9/22/2009 11:11:05 PM
The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. But the one who is rich should take pride in his low position, because he will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away even while he goes about his business.
James 1.9-11, NIV
Joy possible. . . even in tough times- James
9/22/2009 11:09:59 PM
"From James, a servant of God to Jewish Christians scattered abroad, Greetings! Dear brothers, is your life full of difficulties and temptations? Then be happy, for when the way is rough, your patience has a chance to grow. So let it grow and don't try to squirm out of your problems, for when your patience is finally in full bloom, you will be ready for anything--strong in character, full and complete."
Wisdom. . . Gimme' summathat James 1.2-5
9/22/2009 11:08:04 PM
Let us look again at the first few verses that James, the half-brother of the Lord, penned.
Dear brothers and sisters, whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow.
Man, I love a good story!
9/22/2009 11:00:44 AM
Sometimes when my back is against the wall, when it seems a situation is hopeless, and people of lesser heart would be greatly worried. . . ha. . . I like to read great stories of faith--I like to know that trusting God really pays off--do you know what I mean?
When you're not sure. . .
9/22/2009 10:59:50 AM
Continuing on with James 4.3, 'the reason you don't have what you want is that you don't ask God for it'. . . we looked at how God answered the prayer of Jehoshaphat in a mighty way--and I have a couple more powerful lessons on prayer that I want to 'arm' you with.
